The “March Music Madness” (MMM)  is an annual event that brings music to the forefront of Spanish language learning, creating an engaging and dynamic classroom experience, and today is the last day for students to get in their votes.

Designed to immerse students in Spanish-language music, participants voted in their Spanish classes throughout March and were encouraged in their appreciation of Spanish music.

The concept, used by the OH World Languages Department, comes from Spnish Plans: “Each day in class play the songs for that day’s bracket and have your students vote for their favorite. The playlists are available on the Home Page. Then have your students vote in the poll for their favorite to see which song advances to the next round.“

During this month, World Languages teachers organize music brackets, where different Spanish-language songs and artists compete for the top spot.

“The students get to learn about Spanish-speaking countries, and music genres, and get vocabulary in the target language in a fun way! Voting makes the students’ voices heard and involved in the music in the language they are learning,” said OH Spanish teacher Jessica Yandun.

Each session features the day’s songs, allowing students to listen, analyze, and vote for their favorites; determining which songs advance to the next round, building excitement as the competition unfolds.

Playlists are made available for easy access, ensuring that students can engage with the music both in and outside of class and also allows students to explore various musical genres and their cultural roots.

“I want students to become more curious and look more into music in the language they are learning,” said Yandun.

“I have kiddos that add the songs to their playlists, follow artists on social media, and sing along to the songs. It is so amazing to watch,” she added.

Categories range across various genres, including pop, rock, reggae-ton, and traditional music, exposing students to the rich diversity of Hispanic musical styles. MMM is more than just a music contest; it’s an opportunity for students to explore different cultures while strengthening their Spanish skills.

By listening to and analyzing lyrics, discussing artists’ social impacts, and even presenting their chosen songs, students enhance their vocabulary, listening comprehension, and communication abilities in Spanish. This event not only turns language learning into a dynamic and entertaining experience, but it also celebrates the rich diversity of Hispanic music while keeping the educational aspect in Spanish classes.

In addition, the MMM promotes collaboration between students, as they work in groups to investigate and present their chosen songs.

“Yes I do enjoy participating in the voting it’s interesting to see what songs take the overall vote

I think it’s a fun thing to do in Spanish class and a good way to connect with classmates and teachers while sharing different preferences in music,” said  OH senior Anahi Cortes.

The MMM ’25 is open from March 3 to March 21, and can vote in the nationwide poll along with hundreds of other Spanish classes. Students can still vote at Spanishplans.
