It has been 11 years since the release of Grand Theft Auto (GTA) V, and now the Fall’25 release of GTA VI is one of the most anticipated games of all time.
GTA VI has been in the works since 2013, and because of the 11-year creation and development period, a lot of people have high expectations for the game.
“[GTA VI] is gonna spark a whole new genre of games entirely,” said OH junior Trevor Davis.The series is arguably one of the most well-known pieces of media of the modern day; GTA V is the highest-grossing media title of all time, outranking any book, movie, or TV show in terms of money made off of purchases.
Take-Two Interactive, the company behind the GTA series and Rockstar Games, had their call discussing projected earnings for the company, featuring CEO Strauss Zelnick. It was confirmed that, unless hit with an unexpected obstacle, Take-Two is planning for a release of Grand Theft Auto VI in the fall of this year.
In various interviews Zelnick has said he plans to release Mafia: The Old Country in the summer, [GTA VI] in the fall, and Borderlands 4 near the end of ’25.
GTA VI is going to have several new features and areas, as confirmed in the trailer. The new features include a short video on social media similar to TikTok and Instagram Reels, car meets, the ability to view body cam and security camera footage, new animals, and a less stiff driving system than GTA V.
“I hope it has crossplay between Playstation and XBOX, I don’t know if it’s crossplay yet but if it was that’d be fire,” said senior CJ Johnson.
The new areas are a replica of the Florida Keys and the Everglades. Although unconfirmed, there is some potential for the Tampa/Northern Florida area to appear as well.
“[I] expect a bigger map, hopefully the entirety of Florida, and better driving mechanics, I just expect more from Rockstar because they haven’t released a game in a while,” said senior Nathan Barry.
Some clips in the trailer are taken in drier, sandier environments more commonly seen in Northern Florida. This is a clear opposition to Southern Florida’s marshy and tropical environment. There are some people hopeful that these unconfirmed areas will appear.
“I really hope that Tampa is in the game, as well as Sarasota, but I don’t think they’ll add it to the map,” said Barry, giving a shout out to his grandmother who lives in Sarasota.
The mix of excitement, new features to attract new people, and the cultural significance of the GTA series means that GTA VI is going to sell more than any other game.
“I would expect their sales to outpace those of any competitors in the gaming industry,” said OH business teacher Timothy Taviani.
