Valentine’s Day is easily the most dreaded holiday. From overly pink decor to loving couples littering the hallways, it is boring when single.
“Many of my students do not know what to do for Valentine’s Day,” said OH Fashions and Relationships teacher Susan Knowles.
Despite this lack of direction in holiday planning, there are a variety of ways a single student can spend Valentine’s Day. Many include hanging with friends or taking a day for themselves.
“There is a lot students can do for themselves during Valentine’s, whether that be solo or in a group. It is a lot better than doing nothing,” said Knowles.
One of the best ways to spend Valentine’s Day is with a group. Gather your friend group and do something fun! Many of the recommended activities include “Galentines” parties (a Valentine-themed party for your gals), cooking classes, spa nights, and volunteering together.
“I think the most fun part of the Valentine’s Day season is having Galentine’s celebrations! I love spending time with my friends and doing festive little activities with them,”said OH senior Julia Matile. “Last year, we did a Board Night where everyone brought a special themed board with snacks!”
When hanging out with the right people, you can turn your lonely Valentine’s into a fun group excursion. If you need guides for a Galentine’s party, there is plenty of inspiration online. I particularly like the YouTube video by digital creator Cristina Viseu, where she gives a how-to guide for potential Galentine hosts.
However, group activities are not the only thing you can do for Valentine’s. You can take a self-care day, work on your hobbies, or take a day trip!
“Do something you don’t normally do, go to the bookstore, go on a date with yourself, or even have a movie marathon,” said Knowles.
If you plan on taking the solo route, you can go on solo dates. Go out to a restaurant or a coffee shop and just sit with yourself. Work on yourself; it can be very difficult to find you-time, so take advantage of it.
Try to spend time away from your phone and social media. If you want to doomscroll, make a Valentine’s craft instead. Any creative endeavor is better than spending hours mindlessly scrolling.
When single, Valentine’s Day offers many opportunities to have fun and build relationships with those around you. Instead of spending your day moping around, find something relaxing and exciting to do.
