As the holidays approach, local businesses are preparing by posting “help wanted” signs in the windows in search of extra employees. These advertisements help allow OH students to apply for jobs and gain work experience.
“I’ve never had a job, and I’m on a big search for one right now. I think having a job is a great opportunity to gain work experience, and I’m expecting to get new skills,” said OH junior Ithika Waldron.
After the pandemic, so many students became disconnected from their communities, not having the motivation for school or work.
According to Matt Masterson, a writer for WTTW News, “There were tens of thousands of teens and young adults in Chicago between the ages of 16-24 who are both out of school and jobless in 2022.”
Now that society has mostly recovered from the pandemic, it is time to get back on track and search for jobs again. Jobs are what help teach students to become responsible, manage money, and prepare them for the real world.
After sending out a survey to OH students on seasonal jobs, it was discovered that over two-thirds of the 10 student respondents are employed. This means the other one-third have not had any real work experience.
“I’ve applied to 11 places, but it’s been very difficult to search for a job,” Waldron said.
Many students are focused on getting a job to make money but often give up after realizing how stressful it could be. Studies show that 83% of people believe it is much easier to find a job during the seasons and not year-round.
“Students are great hires. This year we took about 250 applications, and I would estimate that about half are currently in school,” said Massacre Haunted House’s Actor Manager Mary Kate Newman.
Even though it may be challenging at times, there are so many places open to hiring younger people and constantly getting more applicants.
For anyone interested in getting a job in Oswego or the surrounding area, looking for hiring posts online, like Indeed, is a great place to start
