Art is displayed in many different ways at OH, but junior Brendon Meyer goes above and beyond, sharing his singing and songwriting even outside of school.
“I was just sitting by my piano at home… I was just thinking of cords and improvising and stuff, and I just found a nice little cord progression that I used, and I just started singing,” Meyer said as he recalled the creation of his first song.
“That [song] turned out to be ‘Someone New’ the fourth track on the extended play,” he added.
Meyer has always had a passion for music. He is involved in the Oswego Vocal Music Department for all of his high school career, along with choirs in junior high.
“We’re not shocked he’s doing something musically. We’re just sort of shocked at his ability to express himself so well lyrically at 16 years old,” said Meyer’s mom, Desiree Meyer.
Brendon Meyer usually starts his writing process by sitting at the piano and finding chords or lyrics that stick out to him. His lyrics are relatable to many, as he dives deeper into the life of a high schooler and the experiences one has.
“That’s what I wanna do with my music, like unite people that are feeling like a certain way and just convey that to everyone else,” Brendon Meyer said.
Meyer uses resources like his piano at home and the OH practice rooms to create his melodies, once he finds his tune, he produces his tracks all by himself.
“I just pull up a music software on my own,” Brendon Meyer explained. “I took a music production class last year to help me with that.”
Brendon Meyer has played at multiple open mics, with overwhelming success and support from family and friends. He views his parents as his “road crew,” the people who help with his equipment transportation at these events.
“We have invested and bought his equipment, which he’s used everything from his speakers to his brand new keyboard,” Desiree Meyer said.
On top of his music career, Brendon Meyer is still a full-time student who has a job and extracurriculars. This has slowed down some of his public performances that he took part in over the summer.
“Right now it’s just a matter of trying to get Brendon’s schedule under control because he is involved in so much,” Desiree Meyer explained. “Brendon would sit and play all night if you let him!”
Along with his family, Brendon Meyer is looking into professional gigs that could give him a platform like never before, as well as working on creating a full-length album in the near future.
Brendon Meyer’s music is available here on Spotify.
