On Oct 18, the OH Student Council held its fall blood drive in the small gym. Around 40 students applied through a Google form to donate blood to those in need, and many student volunteers were helping check people in and helped as needed.
A blood shortage has existed for years. Although donating blood requires a few moments of discomfort, it can save lives and restore people’s health.
“This blood is going to be taken out to hospitals and go to patients with need [like] trauma victims or cancer patients.” Daijerne Slater, a phlebotomist for Versiti, said.
A form was sent to those at OH who were interested in donating blood. Student volunteers and staff helped set up the blood drive for those willing to donate. Very few requirements were needed for the donation, such as weight and basic health.

“Today, I helped out by writing passes, setting up posters and chairs, and overall the equipment. We also help sign and check people in,” said OH senior and student council vice president Mackenzie Benz.
Another blood drive date is set for the spring season, but those above the age of 16 years old who want to donate blood outside of school can go to local blood drive sites like Versiti.
“We host them both here in school during the day in the fall and spring. But Versiti, the company, has locations all over,” said OH social worker April Ponte, “I know they have one in Naperville if you just wanted to go there and donate anytime,”
Medical situations that require blood include surgery and those hurt. Blood can be used for various reasons, but it’s typically stored for future uses.
“We could always use more . Blood is something that cannot be created; we create it ourselves in our own bodies,” said Slater.
Donating blood is free of cost and provides aid to others. Those interested in donating blood can start off by making an appointment with the American Red Cross or Versiti. Eligibility and criteria necessary will depend on each individual site.
“Their cause is to help other people. I think it would be really amazing if you could meet the criteria and were willing to ,” said OH junior Sahar Zaheer.
