Laika Studios will bring Coraline back to theaters for a limited time on Halloween, marking the movie’s 15th anniversary by providing remastered screenings in 3D.
This isn’t the first time Laika has returned the movie to theaters. It was re-released in theaters in Aug. 2023, and due to its popularity, they have continued to bring the popular animation to theaters throughout 2023 and 2024.
The movie was originally released in 2009, a whopping 15 years ago. What made the animation unique was the use of stop-motion animation.
“I enjoy stop-motion; it is a cool way to film animation,” said OH junior Heidi Glaser.
Stop-motion animation is quite a rough process because creators must capture scenes and alter the objects within the frame individually.
Since the movie was released in 2009, many OH students spent their childhood with it, meaning that its return resonates a great deal with them. But how much does the movie really mean to students?
“I really liked the plot; the lore of Coraline is really interesting. I grew up with the movie, so I already have a great love for it,” said Glaser.
It may just be a rush of nostalgia, but the movie is held in a special place in many OH student’s hearts.
A common question is whether Coraline will return in a sequel, especially in light of its returning popularity on screen.
“It would be very interesting to see how they would continue the story and see how deep they can dig,” said OH senior Grace Nachtigall.
Unfortunately, Laika Studios has made it clear that there will not be a sequel in the near future, and according to Comic Book Resources, “Coraline 2 doesn’t seem likely.”
Laika Studios has always been firmly against producing sequels for their movies, So it seems as though OH students won’t be able to experience a sequel, at least not in the forseeable future.
Since it has been confirmed that there will be no sequel soon, fans have created their own theories that could change people’s take on the ending and many of these theories have circulated the internet. Being a popular movie after 15 years is a big deal. So, with new theories and plot holes constantly being created and discovered, Coraline could sustain its relevance for a long time.
“A theory I like is that Coraline is still in danger and hasn’t fully escaped in the ‘Other World’. There have been hints alluding to the fact that she may not have been as safe as she had thought.,” said senior Erin Hemby.
Coraline has been a staple in many OH students’ lives, and with the movie making yet another return to theaters, students have an opportunity to relive their childhoods and watch Coraline in its newly remastered form.
