On Sept. 22, fall will begin burning with the warning to settle into the school routine. Autumn is a sign of change educationally, as well as seasonally. Yet, a problem everyone often mentions is the shift in weather: we start the season hot, then end it cold.

“There is also the case of senioritis, a condition where students in their last year experience a sudden loss of enthusiasm for academic activities,“ said senior Caleb Vasely.

However, this lack of motivation can be treated—picture senior year like the task of raking leaves. They get themselves lost in the chore, and are not ashamed to help when they are approached for it- exactly like a student constructing a project for school.

“Like participating in a school competition, I find raking leaves to be an enjoyable task-therapeutic if you will,” said Vesely.

You must consider this process with its timeframe, the expanse of your limits, and other factors. Always being aware of these details means no one individual detail can derail your work. Usually, seniors hit that age where they feel that they have the energy to work hard but no motivation to do so.

“More than any other grade, even passing college, seniors are the ones struggling to find their place in their lives. That struggle tends to interfere with their current projects they have to do,”  said Vesely.

As you get old you’re no longer at risk of losing eagerness in your projects so much as you are losing your sanity when there are roadblocks to them. Though, if you do get a roadblock you should work smarter, not harder. You have to recognize which issues are affecting you in the fall and create good habits to counter them, often bad habits have to be snuffed out.

According to senior Elizabeth Anderson, “I would say procrastination is a major issue for seniors especially during a fall semester because the school year has just started.”

However, what makes an exemplary student is their grit during this season. A bad day might wreck their motivation and to top it all off they could be rewarded with the worst weather an Illinois autumn has to offer. Despite this, successful students don’t complain or throw a fit, they push through or adapt and recover.

“Frequency analysis of the focus group transcripts indicated that students were mixed in their assessment of whether the fall break was effective in reducing their perceived stress and helping them manage their academic workload.” says the research article ‘Fall Break Fallout: Exploring Student Perceptions of the Impact of an Autumn Break on Stress’.

Autumn provides an opportunity to redesign your lifestyle. One should remove negativity and replace it with positive thoughts. Students should look at tasks like the coming of leaves falling as therapeutic tasks and see harsh Illinois weather as an opportunity to plan around other obstacles. That should be the attitude every OH student should have.
