On Aug. 21, GamesCon began to tease new game releases for this year and beyond. Every year GamesCon brings people together for one common interest: video games.
“First Person Shooters and MOMAs have been popular with the students. Pokemon Unite has been a surprise breakout because it can be played on different platforms like Switches, Switch Lites, and mobile phones,” said OE teacher and ESports Coach Amy Whitlock
Many games were mentioned, including “Borderlands 4,” “Dying Light: The Beast,” “Marvel’s Rivals,” “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6,” and more. GamesCon is a multiple-day event that took place in Cologne, Germany, and ended On Aug. 25, 2024. Many gamers always look forward to seeing what games companies are releasing, including some of our students at Oswego High School.
“I have heard about Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 which I used to be a fan of the Black Ops series,” said OHS senior Andrew Frye.
Games like Black Ops 6, Marvel Rivals and Borderlands 4 were announced with Release dates.
Black Ops 6 is coming out on Oct. 25, 2024, Marvel Rivals is coming out on Dec. 6, 2024, and Borderlands 4 plans to come out in 2025.
When new games are announced, many casual and professional gamers, be it students or working adults around the world, look forward to something new and interesting to play. The online world is massive and games both old and new bring people together.
“We get a lot of participation with Overwatch 2, Valorant, Super Mario Bros Ultimate,” said Whitlock.
The release of these new games will encourage players to play them and encourage other developers to create interesting and new titles. Video games in our society have been a new gateway to making friends and having new hobbies.
“If I had to pick one game to play for the rest of my life it would probably be Roblox since there are millions of games on there already,” said Frye
Our ESport Team also looks at these games, since a lot of games have a competitive mode or twist to it. A new addition to the competitive sport, is the game Valorant that came out to console on August 2, 2024, expanding the player base to more than just PC gamers.
“We have looked at adding more sports titles to ESports. This includes Fifa, NBA, and Madden,” said Assistant ESports Coach Obed Fernandez.
New games that come out people love and ends up bringing the community closer together and helps many of our students, as video games are a safe place for many.
