On Aug. 25, OH wide receiver Michael Kelly announced his commitment to play football next year for Drake University, a Division 1 school. Kelly has already put in countless hours of hard work to get this chance and still isn’t finished.
“Michael’s always been a talent, [[… and]] hearing that Michael Kelly committed to Drake, I’m not shocked by that,” said Head Football Coach Brian Cooney.
Kelly has played all four years in high school and is excited to continue playing for Drake. The work that Kelly has put in throughout the years has greatly benefited his football career, but he needs to continue his hard work to make the switch.
“After this season, I will try to put on more mass and become better for college,” said Kelly. Signing to a Division 1 school from high school is one of the biggest achievements in high-level athlete’s careers. As for Michael, he is already planning on how he will make that jump in school.
Cooney said, “[It’s amazing] what these colleges will do to a kid’s just overall physique and their ability. I think he’s just scratched the surface of what he’s capable of if he’ll continue to work, which I know he will.”
The step up from high school to college football is a big one. Kelly has the opportunity to play for the highest division in college football and is willing to put in a lot of preparation and training.
Kelly expanded on his career after high school when he said, “I feel good about [My career], you know I’m playing for Drake, and I’ll be getting a lot of looks there.”
Kelly has shown confidence in his football career after high school, but the road wasn’t always easy for him to get to the position that he is in right now.
“In eighth grade, I broke my collarbone, and that brought me back [[…]] but I just had to know I was going to get better,” Kelly said.
Michael Kelly has put in so much work to get an opportunity that comes very rarely, and his tenacity and dedication to the sport show a glimpse of his potential, and he is sure to make strides in college.
