Spring break is right around the corner, and as the weather gets warmer, the opportunity for exciting outdoor activities grows. However, it can often be difficult to get involved and find the perfect way to enjoy the start of the season. Many OH students plan on going out and are ready to share their favorite ways to make the most of their time off.
“I’m looking forward to being able to get outside and enjoy the outdoors, it always relieves any built-up stress,” said junior Josie Eggert.
Something as simple as taking on different hiking trails can be a great way to get a breath of fresh air while truly connecting with the surrounding nature. Appreciating new trails, whether biking, running, or walking, can be an amazing, cost-efficient way to welcome the incoming warm weather.
Local nature preserves such as Big Rock Forest Preserve, Saw Wee Kee Park, and Richard Young Forest Preserve offer a variety of trails, whether one is looking for a small walk or a longer hike.
“There are so many great, unknown [hiking] trails around the area to be appreciated,” said Eggert.
Another way to enjoy nature and the surrounding wildlife is to visit Phillips Park Zoo in Aurora, which offers exhibits ranging from bald eagles to mountain lions. The park is open every day of the week and is free to guests of all different ages.
The city of Chicago provides many seemingly never-ending attractions, which can be a great way to get out of the house this spring break and enjoy the nearby area.
“I love going to Chicago because it has everything. It’s so close to where we [live] so we can reap all [of] the benefits from it,” said senior Scarlett Lane.
The Navy Pier, which has breathtaking views of Lake Michigan, offers many different events, such as “Spring Break at the Pier” and the “St. Patrick’s Day Water Taxi.”
The city also provides other opportunities for fun through different activities such as the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum, and the Museum of Science and Industry. Many of these locations also give out discounts and even free days for Illinois residents, such as the Shedd’s free Tuesday evenings and the Field Museum’s free Wednesdays.
“[Chicago has] amazing museums, wonderful restaurants, and beautiful scenery [that can be enjoyed],” said Lane.
With so many different ways students can choose to spend their break, it is guaranteed to bring relaxation and fun.
