Megamind Vs. The Doom Syndicate comes out March 1, and it already looks like a mega failure based on the trailer.
In the past month, Dreamworks quietly dropped the trailer for a sequel for Megamind (2010), titled Megamind Vs. The Doom Syndicate. While the original premiered in theaters, the sequel is being released straight to the streaming service Peacock, much to long-time fans’ disappointment.
The trailer already received a very negative reception on appearance and concept, with the majority of people thinking the animation looked worse than the decade-old original. A lot of people also had something to say about the plot of the film, thought the majority of it is still vague. Some people actually don’t mind the questionable animation and plot and just look forward to another Megamind film.
“100% I’m gonna be the first one there,“ junior Gabriel Beso said.
Much of the criticism for the sequel comes from the belief that the original movie is considered underrated by many people, as it came out in 2010 at the same time as other blockbuster films such as Despicable Me, which came out July 9 of that year The premise of both films are very similar in plot and design too, revolving around an animated villain protagonist that turns good.
Ultimately Megamind would be overshadowed by the bigger film, leading to fans of the series to believe that it was a masterpiece and a hidden gem that didn’t need a sequel.
Over the years this belief would extend to even lesser fans of the series, people who only vaguely remembered the film. “[The sequel] looks like it’s like co-produced by Cocomelon,” OH senior Matthew Aviles said.
Currently, its trailer on YouTube sits at 95% dislikes, with 1 million views on the video. Common criticisms from the video comments describe the movie as looking “cheap” and “uglier than the original.”
It is speculated that the sequel will have a much smaller budget than the original. The original had a budget of 130 million dollars which is slightly higher than other movies of its genre. While it is unknown how much the sequel has, it will be known after its release.
Others say that the movie taints the original’s pristine status as a singular animated masterpiece. A lot of discussions online talk about the sizable gap between the films’ releases and the amount of years it’s been. Most think it doesn’t make sense to release the film on such short notice and after such a long time.
Commenters are even more upset since the film is being released to streaming services immediately, instead of first being released to the public in theaters, and they believe the sequel isn’t honoring the credit the series deserves. That being said, a second film warrants a lot of care from DreamWorks.
“Yeah I liked the first one but this one looks boring,” junior Armando Ortis said.
Other fans have stayed hopeful that the movie isn’t as bad as it seems and that the producers have listened to the criticism. It looks like this film will be another cash grab by a company that doesn’t have anything else to release, but there’s still people who look forward to it, regardless of lack of plot.
“[The trailer has] got me excited to look at it,” Bezo said. With it being released to stream directly to Peacock on March 1st, things are looking grim for longtime fans of the series.
