On Sunday, Feb. 18, 2023, the OH band program will host its tenth annual Bandcake performance from 8–11 a.m. in the OH cafeteria.

“I’m somewhat excited for this performance. This is my first year participating. I’m in a pep band this year and doing a song with three other people,” said junior Nate Giffin.

Bandcakes is an all-you-can-eat-style buffet of pancakes (gluten-free and regular), sausage, orange juice, and coffee, accompanied by the performances of the OH jazz ensemble and pep band.

“It’s about the same every year. The band teachers host [Bandcakes with] food for people, and the jazz bands and the pep band play,” said junior Aralyn Velazquez. “It is pretty low-key and very chill. The band boosters help set [everything up].”

Tickets will be available at door 11 for ten dollars per person on the day of the performance. Children five and under eat for free, but performers who would like breakfast must purchase tickets. As a bonus, the first 100 guests to enter the venue will receive a complimentary card for a free appetizer from Texas Roadhouse.

The event schedule will have Jazz Ensemble 1 from 9:20–9:45 a.m., Jazz Ensemble 3 from 9:50–10:10 a.m., Jazz Ensemble 2 from 10:15–10:35 a.m., and the Pep Band from 10:40–11 a.m.

All proceeds will go to the Band Boosters general fund. The fund supports all band programs and concerts as well as scholarships, instrument maintenance, and uniforms for students.

“Bandcakes has raised $3,000 and [more] in previous years, so we hope to make at least that much,” said OH band teacher and event organizer Stephanie San Roman.

Despite the band having several fundraisers, the band programs still need money to fund all of the events and help they offer. Band students, such as Giffin, shared why the money would be important to them and the future of OH music.

“[This event is] important because [it will] raise money for the band and the band boosters in general, and frankly, we could use the money,” Giffin said.

There will be a 50/50 raffle and a basket raffle at the event. Tickets for both raffles have the same prices: one for $1, six for $5, twelve for $10, and 25 for $20.

“Raffle prizes include all-inclusive tickets to Brookfield Zoo, Azza salon gift bags, prom packages from Bella Gia, and tickets to the Paramount Theater,” said San Roman.

Students and families had several opportunities too, such as the creative basket contest where the winners received four free tickets to Bandcakes. Students also had the opportunity for service hours, and the event provided a sense of community by supporting students’ musical talent.

“Our band boosters began this fundraiser a number of years ago. It has definitely been successful for us and has grown over the years.” San Roman explained. “Bandcakes is a very fun time! There’s great food, great music, and great people involved in the event!”
