With college application season in full swing, OH hosted a fall college fair in the main gym from periods 4-6 on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023 to aid undecided seniors with their plans after high school.
The fair included 45 institutions that ranged from colleges to the military and a cosmetology school. However, that was not as many as the fair organizer and OH counselor April Ponte would have hoped for.
Concerning future events, Ponte wished for the attendance of “more private schools, and more trade options.”
Ponte said, “The principle schools that did attend have a large number of applicants from OHS that apply to these schools,” and therefore these schools were a priority.
Despite that, students were offered information about additional vocations, opening their brains up to other career paths such as dermatology or cosmetology hinting at how the fair had made them question the track they had set themselves on.
When questioned about college and their plans after attending the fair, OH senior Mayra Nolasco Ramirez said that the fair gave her “more of an idea of places to go but it would have been better if the colleges went more in-depth about the scholarship offers.”
To encourage communication with prospective students about scholarships and the like, colleges utilize Strivescan.
Strivescan is an application that “strives” to support students in discovering and connecting with colleges at college fair events. Strivescan works through a barcode system in which students sign up with their phone numbers to receive said barcode via text. In addition, students can opt to insert information about themselves like GPA, SAT/ACT scores, as well as their academic interests to send to schools.
According to Strivescan,”colleges can download the Strivescan app to scan student phones and get access to their information instantly.”
If there is a particular school a student did not get their barcode scanned by, they can still share their information with the said institution through an email sent out by Strivescan.
Granted the college fair also encourages juniors to start brainstorming before their senior year, “Colleges prefer to see students have their Strivescan form filled out so that if they’re talking to them even earlier than senior year they can get that student into their systems so that they can keep in contact with them through the recruitment process,” said Ponte.
College admission counselors were asked if they felt as if they were representing their school to the best of their ability.
North Central College first-year admission counselor Carolina Aponte Crespo, a current alumni from NCC, affirmed that they portrayed the establishment accurately in terms of representation as they have “an idea of all the resources and opportunities students can have/do,” which they took advantage of during their schooling there.
“As an alumni currently getting their master’s at North Central College, I feel like I have that fresh in my mind, and I feel like I knew a lot about the school before becoming an admissions counselor,” said Crespo.
The fall college fair prevailed in its attempt to diversify students’ interests and post-school plans through socialization with college representatives hosted in the college fair.
