Once the marching band season ends, many color guard members continue to use their skills in a different setting: within the OH Winter Guard. “I enjoy the opportunity to explore new ways of spinning, tossing, and moving without needing to keep pace with a larger group,” Winter Guard director Lauren Rogers said. Winter guard is a different experience from not just the perspective of students, but it is also different from the side of leadership.

Opinion: ‘Tis the season: When should holiday celebrations start?

Many companies start sending out holiday catalogs as early as September. While this can be an exciting reminder of upcoming holidays, it can also be overwhelming trying to plan so far ahead. Credit: Taylor Ana, 42Fifty

Already, companies are starting to send out Christmas catalogs, grandmas are addressing hundreds of cards, and carolers are beginning to practice their songs. But we’ve only gone through one round of pumpkins, the leaves haven’t even started to fall, Spirit Halloweens haven’t returned to their graves, and the Macy’s Santa hasn’t even thought about starting the holidays yet.

Senior OH art Students Madison McNanna, Ava Rose Michelon, and Marah Pierce were recently rewarded for their creative endeavors as they had their art displayed at ArtSpace Chicago this month as part of the 2025 Art ConnectED showcase. This showcase is made to highlight up-and-coming artists in the Chicagoland area by giving them a platform to show their art. “They’re already making connections, because a lot of people that are affluent will go there and they’re looking at rising artists,” said Fine Arts Department Chair Michael Skura. While getting their art out into the public eye is important, being in the showcase is important to these students. “It feels great because art’s so important in my life, it’s been a thing that’s been a constant since I was little,” said McNanna.

A new face has joined the OH Panther family: meet new dean, Spencer Brown, who is already feeling the family nature of OH. "Y’know, I just wanna say that everybody has been so genuinely nice, as I’ve gotten to know people," Brown said. "I’ve never been in a space where so many kids say ‘Good morning’ back when I say ‘Good morning,’ or so many adults are eager to say ‘Hello’ as well. It’s just been so welcoming, and it’s just made me feel like I belong. So I’m just very thankful to everybody," he added.  The OH Deans team is happy to welcome Brown, too. “He comes to us with a wealth of knowledge from previous experiences,” said OH Dean Ryan Kabara, expressing his excitement that Brown has joined the four other deans at OH after Lynn Wingard resigned at the end of the '24-25 academic year.
