Retirement can be a big change, especially after so many years working in one career. OH teacher, author, and former baseball coach, Christopher Neitzel, is officially setting down his bat and getting ready to empty his classroom after 35 years of teaching. “It’s a little surreal, I signed my papers 4 years ahead of time, which felt weird, but since then it's just been kind of inevitable,” said Neitzel. Throughout Neitzel’s years here at OH, he's had many different experiences, not just as a teacher but as a student as well. “I met him in 1991 when he subbed for my PE class; he was a great team captain, and I'm happy for him to finally escape,” said psychology teacher Gregory Verdino.

Sometimes, students don't pay attention to our custodians, quietly working so hard and doing so much to keep our school beautiful. Maybe it's time to change that. Eva Hernandez De Cruz is an OH custodian who has been working here for 22 years. “On a regular basis, I work five days a week," De Cruz said, "but if there is overtime, I stay here.”

Hall passes pilling up: Pros and cons of the little orange slips

Students are consistently asking for the little orange passes, some taking advantage of leaving class, but could it be becoming too much? Shown is a pile of orange hall passes and a few tardy slips as collected by one teacher since only the start of second semester. Credit: Miley Salas, 42Fifty

Various forms of hall passes have been around for decades at OH, although no source could say when they were first truly established. OH staff cannot stress enough the importance of these passes. Students? Not so much. OH Dean Susan Johnson said, “I honestly couldn't say when hall passes were first established here at OH, this being my third year here, [[but]] I can say that the [[kind of printed, paper]] orange passes did start when I first got here.”

Opinion: TikTok Is Running Out Of Time

A threat to ban TikTok, a crucial social media source for many OH students, had been spread nationwide. On Jan. 19, Tiktok went dark, but only for 12 hours. Credit: Miley Salas, 42Fifty

TikTok, which was recently banned on Jan. 19 and then brought back again almost the same day, is now unable to be downloaded from the Apple and Google Play app stores along with other ByteDance-owned apps like CapCut and Lemon8. “Tiktok is a multifunctional thing for me, I am updated [on current events] and learn a lot just by scrolling. I never enjoyed the news, but Tiktok is a fun way to stay educated and updated,” said OH junior Maddy Martinez.
