My name is Jessica VanVooren, and this is my second year on the 42Fifty publication staff. I am a senior in high school. I am a part of the OH National Honors Society (NHS), the National Art Honors Society (NAHS), and the Quill & Scroll (Journalism) Honors Society.

OH metals teacher Alejandro Rodriguez influences through photography

Over the past 22 years, Alejandro Rodriguez has taught automotive and metals courses at OH, helping many students start their journey into the workforce. His work in photography, however, impacts just as many students.  “He did capture a few pictures of me pinning someone, which is pretty cool,” said varsity wrestler Dillon Griffin. “[[His]] photography shows how I look during wrestling.”

After spending much of his free time creating purpose behind his clothing brand Eternal Peace, OH senior Valentino Thompson is well on his way to achieving his entrepreneurial goals. “The slogan is ‘Styles for Serenity,’ as in fashion for peace or finding peace through our fashion,” explained Thompson. “Everyone has their own style, and I want everyone to be able to wear our brand.”

Students explore AP classes offered

Across the country, high school students are preparing their future selves by taking college-level courses through CollegeBoard’s AP classes. Exceptional performance in these classes may exempt students from introductory college courses, saving them both time and money. Remember that AP classes do not have to align with the future majors of students: “I would suggest taking one [AP class] outside of your major because you could get credit for it and not have to take an introductory course in college,” says Pamela Phelps, AP Biology teacher at OH. Students planning to stay in Illinois for college can receive a guaranteed benefit thanks to Illinois House Bill 3428: any student who scores a three or above on an AP test must receive college credit from public colleges in Illinois. Choosing between the 36 AP courses offered by OH can be daunting, especially since there is a diverse spread of courses across so many subject areas. However, once the classes are broken down into brief descriptions, they are far less intimidating.

Opinion: Local cafés embrace fall with drinks and sweet treats

Distinctive aromas of caramel, cinnamon, pumpkin, and hazelnut waft past as you sip from a warm mug and snack on a delectable treat; the warm flicker of a candle as you cuddle up with a blanket on your couch and enjoy an order from a local café. These are perfect images of autumn.   The chilly weather of autumn balances perfectly with a warm pastry and a warm cup of a spiced beverage. Luckily, there are lots of cafés in the Oswego area that can provide anything you need to stay cozy this fall.  “The Village Grind has a super cozy vibe. It feels like you could be having coffee in your own living room,” says Ryan Pentzein, PLTW engineering teacher at OHS.  Take a look at what the local cafes, including Village Grind, Krema, and Atrévete Confections, are offering this fall.

Opinion: Fall hikes to resurrect the granola girls from their slumber

Hiking trail outside of Matthiessen State Park

The crunch of fallen leaves painted in every shade of red; the gentle sounds of the creek; the scuttering squirrels searching for their next treat. You find the tallest tree and lean against it as you feel the soft fall air fit your face. Your hiking boots sink into the soft ground as the blazing summer gently drifts into fall. Very few people know about the vast benefits of hiking. In addition to the beautiful views and fresh air there are so many physical advantages.  OH LRC Director Drew Mundsinger is an avid hiker who loves the health benefits of getting in a quick trail walk.  “It’s a great way to relieve stress that doesn’t involve the stigma of working out or going on the treadmill or to the weight room,” said Mundsinger.
