I am a senior at OH and so excited to be a Managing and Opinions Section Editor this year! I love working on 42Fifty, but I am also very involved in band and numerous honor societies here. Looking forward to doing great work this year!

Screaming goats and bad CGI: The downfall of Marvel

Since the release of Avengers: Endgame and the end of the Infinity Saga back in 2019, Marvel has had to pivot and begin their new era of films. For many fans though, Endgame did not only signal the end of an era but the beginning of a rather slippery downhill slope for the franchise.  Marvel has produced movies and comics that have brought millions of people together. Between record-breaking worldwide releases of the films and the ongoing overwhelming love for the original source material, people of all ages have been fans of the franchise for a long time.  “I think it gives the audiences what they want and it's like watching a TV series,” said English and film teacher Amy Severinski, “it keeps going [[and]] they keep on making more films.”

Spotify Wrapped: Students anticipate, enjoy the musical reveal of the year

There are many big events during the year for people to look forward to. These events often represent the end of a year-long journey as a result of months of hard work and often spark widespread excitement. Sports fans look forward to the Superbowl, movie fanatics have the Oscars, and there are countless other events to look forward to during the year, but for music fans, the biggest day of the year is the day Spotify Wrapped is released.  Spotify uses an algorithm to put together listeners’ top songs, artists, and other musical favorites as a result of a year of listening. These Wrapped lists are then communicated to listeners via their app sometimes at the end of Nov. or the beginning of Dec. and are available to any Spotify subscribers. This year they were released on Wed., Dec. 4, 2024.

OH Color Guard spins into their first winter competition season

The OH Color Guard has been an important part of the marching band for decades, and over the years, the program has become increasingly more popular: comprising 30 members this past fall, and every year they seem to get increasingly more advanced. This year was no exception, but they are starting something new this winter: Winter Guard.  Rather than stopping after the fall marching band season is over, the color guard will continue to practice through the winter as well as compete at local circuit competitions. Having a full-out winter season like this is brand new to OH but that does not mean that the guard is new to year-round rehearsals.  “Over the last couple of years, we have been testing the waters with informal Spin Clubs, where we would have optional winter-season rehearsals to keep skills fresh, as well as attending local winter guard contests,” said Head Color Guard Coach Lauren Rogers.

Many celebrations come with the Halloween season. From trick-or-treating to costume parties, people love to be festive for the spooky season, but one of the most popular celebrations is staying in to watch classic horror movies.
