Sept 25, 2026 — The Oswego Police Department (OPD) just lifted the shelter in place for Colchester drive and the immediate vicinity. As of 10:00 am they have the subject in custody, and have cleared and secured the subject’s residence. Police are still on the scene completing an investigation. An initial press release has been issued, with more information on the way.
According to the Village of Oswego Police, IL Facebook post with an initial press release, the incident began as a domestic disturbance before escalating to an armed conflict. Earlier this morning, officers helped a female resident safely retrieve her property and leave the residence. Later, at 1:19, a male called 9-1-1 requesting medical assistance. Upon arrival of officers, they heard yelling and threats toward officers, as well as a firearm discharge. The subject was taken into custody without further incident, and the investigation is still ongoing.
The OPD are currently providing hourly status updates via the official Village of Oswego Police, IL Instagram and Facebook accounts. NBC5 Chicago also has an updating article. No injuries are currently reported, and the shelter in place has been lifted. Earlier in the day it was reduced from a full mile radius to 1/4 mile.
“[The incident] is happening on my street, and didn’t affect us until everyone in my house had to either go to work or school,” said 2025 OH alum Jessica Bellah, who lives on Colchester Drive, said. “At one point there was police tape blocking off our neighborhood.”
Schools are in-session as normal, although Traughber Junior High, Prairie Point Elementary, and Southbury Elementary have a police presence as a precaution. According to an email sent to students and parents at 11:55, outdoor recess and PE for these schools will resume.
According to the Oswego Police IL social media accounts, this is following a report leading to a welfare check, a process where concerned neighbors prompt the police to conduct an, often brief, check in. When officers arrived on the scene, a firearm was heard discharging inside the residence, and a currently unidentified male became erratic and verbally confrontational toward officers. No injuries are currently reported, as per the Village of Oswego Facebook account and NBC5 Chicago.
According to a Facebook Post from a Multi County Police Scanner account, the initial call went out at 1:30 am for an armed and barricaded subject. Swat teams were dispatched and the shelter in place order was released.
“It was very, I mean very unexpected,” OH senior Joseph Brian Weigand said, who as of the 11:00 am interview with 42Fifty was still sheltering in place.
Other people online have reported hearing and seeing helicopters, and a large number of police and emergency vehicles, in the area. People have also reported seeing increased police presence as far as Southbury.
SD#308 sent out emails at 6:47 and 8:03 am notifying students and parents that busses will not be running inside the shelter-in-place zone, and that while they anticipate significant delays, the school buildings are not directly affected.
