In an email sent to students and parents/guardians this morning, the OH community learned that “due to the expected heat on Friday afternoon, the Homecoming Pep Assembly at Oswego High School will take place in the morning during periods 2 and 3.”
The heat, which according to The Weather Channel, is expected to be 90 degrees and sunny skies during the previously-scheduled 1:30 p.m. assembly, was of concern to administration.
“I do understand that it was because of the heat or whatever which is good because like then we don’t have to be out there [in the heat] and all,” said senior Cameron Fichtel. “But I feel like it’s going to affect everyone’s day having it at the beginning instead of the end.”
The impact to students’ day begins after the second period starts at 8:14 a.m. Students are to report to first period as normal with no adjustments, then report to second period and be dismissed by grade level over the intercom.
When the pep assembly is over, students are to “report straight to their 3rd period class, where attendance will be taken,” stated the email.
Periods 4-8 will follow the normal bell schedule.
“It’s really inconvenient to get all hyped up in the pep rally and then having to go back to school.” OH senior, Carley Guger, said. “I feel like that’s going to affect my education because I’m really going to be excited and hyped up then I’ll have to go back to school and act normal.”
Similarly, junior Abby Sneller said, “I’m not too happy about it. I wish it was during the eighth period.”
While the email was sent early today, Fichtel said that not all students may have heard about the news from that source. “I know I read my emails, but I also know other people don’t check their emails.”
OH pep assembly held Fri. AM without issue
However, OH students held their pep assembly the next day without issue in 70 degree weather Friday morning between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m.
This was in stark contrast to the decision made by Oswego East High School, who also celebrated homecoming week this week, but chose to cancel the pep assembly entirely on Fri., Oct. 3.
In an email issued to OE parents and students on Oct. 2, OE administration stated, “The scheduled assembly is cancelled, but [the Oswego East] StuCo students are already working on creating an alternative pep assembly to celebrate [the] Crosstown Football game.”
The Crosstown Football game is scheduled for Fri., Oct. 17 at Oswego High School’s Ken Pickerill Stadium.
