The pop industry has been booming this summer with many artists adding to their ever-expanding catalogs with new snippets, songs, and albums.
One of the most notable artists this summer was Conan Gray, famous for his debut album ‘Kid Krow.” He has welcomed a new album into his discography. Wishbone has taken the streaming world by storm since it was released to all streaming platforms on Aug. 15.
With Conan Gray being one of the most popular and influential artists of recent years, fans weren’t very surprised when the album was released, that it was another well put together and well thought out hit, reaching 38,857,436 streams in the first week of its release.
“I think it was a very cohesive album, and I mean album in the fullest sense of creating songs that go very well together,” said OH junior Delaney Segarra.
With Gray’s fourth studio album being announced on May 22, a whole three months before the eventual release, it was safe to say anticipation and excitement were at an all-time high when Conan then released two singles early that were set to be on the album. The two singles being ‘Vodka Cranberry’ and ‘This Song.’
“I listened to the album immediately as it came out! I love Conan, and I was very excited for the album,” said OH alumni Sedona DeBolt.
With Gray’s catalog historically being from his experiences and true feelings, his past work has often hit listeners deeply, leaving everlasting marks and sometimes even feeling targeted.
“I kind of took it as the stages of a situationship. The secrecy of it turns to love, turns to the breakup, and then the stages of a breakup,” said DeBolt.
Wishbone was an album coming from Gray’s personal experience with a breakup, and like his past albums, the most recent being ‘Found Heaven,’ it was a deeply personal project for him. The time between Found Heaven and Wishbone being 497 days, almost a year and a half.
This time gap led to Gray writing an astounding 300 songs for Wishbone, as stated in a recent interview with Capital Buzz. Gray states this after being asked what tips he had to get over a heartbreak as the song being discussed was ‘My World’ a song regarding a breakup and realizing one’s worth. This passion for the project didn’t go unnoticed though, as many listeners found it to make sense, hearing Conan’s passion and raw emotion in the lyrics and performance.
“I saw this interview that Conan said he wrote like 300 songs for the album and then ended up only putting 12 on there and that seems so obvious when I listen to it, it’s very like cohesive you can tell all the songs were put intentionally and all have meaning to each other,” said Segarra.
Overall, Gray’s new album Wishbone was another gut-wrenching and deeply emotional project as expected from him. With all of his past work culminating to produce this well thought out and personal passion project. Listeners everywhere are dancing and crying as they keep in tune with any new work Conan announces.
“Wishbone feels very taken care of and extremely precise,” said Debolt. “I can tell Conan worked hard on this because every lyric fits well and people around the world are connecting to his music. I think he puts a lot of care into his music, but this one feels more personal. I can tell he wanted everything to be perfect, I think he achieved that goal!”
