Flowers, dates, chocolate, and heart-shaped notes. What’s not to love about Valentine’s Day? This sweet holiday, celebrated on Feb. 14, is all about spreading love and appreciation for one another.
“I think whether it’s a romantic relationship or a friendship it’s about showing your love for everyone and the people you care about,” said senior Emmerson Kelsey. “I think my boyfriend and I are going to go out to dinner or he’s going to make me a meal and we’ll watch a movie.”
When Kelsey’s boyfriend was asked what Valentine’s Day meant to him he had similar things to say.
“It’s connecting with the person you love and doing stuff with them that day,” said Kelsey’s boyfriend, senior Joshua Flores.
When asked how each of them liked to show their love and appreciation for others, they both agreed that their way of showing affection was through sentimental gifts.
“I love giving gifts like sentimental pieces too,” said Flores.
“I love gifts. I am very much a gift giver. Also letters, my boyfriend and I found that every holiday especially, Valentine’s Day, that letters are very sentimental, so you don’t have to spend a lot or any money to show someone you appreciate them,” said Kelsey.
“Last year I did personalized Legos of us two. This year I think I’m going to do like a picture book and some chocolates because you can’t go wrong with some candy,” continued Kelsey.
OH sophomore Billy Musallam shared that he saw Valentine’s Day as a day to do something special for and with someone you care about. When asked what his plans were for the day he shared a few ideas.
“Usually for people I care about I’ll write a note and give them a candy I know they like,” said Musallam. “Maybe with a friend, there’s a wrestling match that day with some wrestlers I like so we’re gonna try to do that.”
Although Valentine’s Day is thought to be a huge day where you have to spend lots of money on someone, it doesn’t have to be that at all. A simple letter of why you love and appreciate them could go a much longer way than a box of chocolates or a super fancy date.
Whether you are choosing to spend Valentine’s Day with your family, friends, or a romantic partner there are tons are ways to celebrate.
