The Oswego girls’ golf team, a Co-op team between OE and OH, successfully finished their season at regionals. On October 2nd, at Whitetail Ridge in Yorkville, the Oswego girls’ golf team scored gold at regionals after a tight victory. The final score was 339, to 340, scored by Plainfield North.
“It was [kind of] insane, I almost didn’t believe it at first. We won but did we actually [win]? We were ecstatic and super happy, especially being back-to-back champions,” said OHs senior and varsity golfer Abigail Mundsinger about her team’s performance at Regionals.
OH freshman and varsity team member Alli Wiertel scored the winning point at the Regionals. The team’s confidence led them to victory and sent The Girl’s Golf team to Regionals and continued their 2-year win streak at Regionals.
“I had a rough front nine, but on the back nine, I was able to [[…]] make the turn,” Wiertel said. “I knew I needed to start playing better for my team to have a chance at winning, so I [[…]] set a goal to make that turn. So, I played good enough to get our team in a good position to win.”
After a 3rd place upset during the girls’ golf conference held a week prior, the girl’s golf team lost a 1-year win streak.
“Our performance at the conference [meet] was very good,” senior golfer Laynie Delap said of her team’s performance. “We ended up in third place, but technically it was second place; the first two teams tied for first place, but we had to get bumped down to third. I think we did good, was it as good as the 18 holes we’ve played before? Definitely not. But it was still a very good score that we put out.”
All of the teams at the conference competition go to Regionals, the girls’ golf team held their heads high, wiped their slates clean, set off into regionals, and got a second chance to show the strength of the Oswego golf team.
“Alli, she did really good and we were basically waiting for her to finish to see how we would place and once her scores loaded in we realized we won,” said Mallory Paustenbach, an OH freshman on the girls golf team.
Similarly, OE girls golf athlete Lia Paribello said, “For the second year in a row, I remember us all sitting around waiting for our last golfer, Alli, to finish. As soon as her score was verified, we knew we won by one, and we all immediately ran to her.”
Through perseverance and teamwork, the girl’s golf team won the regional championship.
The varsity girls golf coach Brian Chandler said, “It’s great to see the relationships that are built between OE and OH students, and the numbers of girls from each school are always changing from year to year. […] It’s very rewarding to see the girls put in all that hard work and then see all the improvements from match to match and season to season.”
