Homecoming is an age-old American high school tradition that celebrates community and school spirit. This year, the Homecoming dance will again be held in the OH auxiliary gym and field house.
However, in 2021, OH’s Homecoming was held outside due to concerns about COVID-19. This was an amazing idea; every homecoming should be held outside if possible.
“ wasn’t overly hot. We weren’t at all slippery, and weird,” said senior Olivia Blazinski, a student who attended the 2021 homecoming.
Like any other homecoming, OH welcomed over 100 students to celebrate the outdoor homecoming, so, with more people attending, the temperature is a main concern during indoor homecoming.
But during outdoor homecoming, temperatures didn’t reach the sticky, muggy, and slippery conditions commonly seen during the traditional indoor dance. The floor and the sound, however, were some complaints of outdoor homecoming.
“I think the parking lot itself isn’t always conducive to a dance floor. Some of the sound too and from the DJ booth spread, it wasn’t as loud because there wasn’t a space for it to stay in the gym like it was ” according to Emily Gaw, a staff chaperone during outdoor homecoming.
Cleaning up homecoming is a large task for the custodians at our school. Whether homecoming is outside or inside we have to be considerate of the amount of work custodians have after the event.
“The kids, they come and they enjoy it and they make a lot of messes with the balloons or sometimes with the little confetti, and bottles, gum, there a lot of little stuff on the floor,” Eva Hernandez De Cruz, an OH custodian.
Whether homecoming is inside or outside, OH students and staff should enjoy it all together. Homecoming is an amazing experience and a fun way to introduce students to high school, so it should be done in a way that works best for attendees and staff alike.
“I like when everybody come in there, and so happy and excited when they dancing and enjoy it, they give me a lot of energy,” said Hernandez.
