The long-awaited fourth season of the occult anime Black Butler will air on Apr. 13, 2024, after captivating the hearts of many fans with its supernatural take on Victorian England for over a decade.
An adaptation of the seventh arc of the manga, the season will closely follow fan-favorite characters Ciel Phantomhive and his butler Sebastian Michaelis as they uncover the sinister secrets of Weston College.
Like others who also watched the show in early adolescence, it’s been something that’s stayed with me for years and something I’m delighted to have back. When I say that I’m a fan of this series, I’m being serious.
Black Butler ignited a fixation on Victorian history in addition to British things in general. Not to mention how I went to another continent just to buy an art book that was only sold in France at that time, and forcing my mom to watch this show with me in middle school, it’s safe to say that it has inexplicably become a part of me after all these years.
What is not a part of me, unfortunately, is baking. I’m sorry, Sebastian.
“Something about it tells me you kind of might have used too much cinnamon, did you add tablespoons or teaspoons?” said friend and test subject OH junior David Ballines, to which I responded by asking which size was smaller, hoping that I could lie my way out of admitting my mistake.
The apple raisin pie that was featured in Season 1 Episode 2 “His Butler, Strongest!”, called for what I assumed to be one whole cup and a quarter of cinnamon, which -to my demise- was neither when I was forced to fork over the recipe.
The belittling did not end there. “I can only taste the cinnamon; where even are the raisins?” continued Ballines.
You know how they force you to pick either a fruit or a vegetable in the lunch line? The one cup of raisins the recipe recommended was replaced with a sad-looking packet of school cafeteria raisins that I pitied too much to throw out. Resourceful? Yes. But would it put me en-par with a demon butler who’s also a culinary genius? No.
¨I can only taste the cinnamon; I don’t mind the cinnamon. The only issue is that’s the only thing I can taste, quite literally, I’m going to get a stomach ache from the cinnamon,” said Ballines while finishing off the last bit of the pie. Good to know the sheer amount of cinnamon would have obliterated a Victorian child.
Considering the pie did not come out looking ¨like the world’s biggest abomination of suffering,” like Ballines said in a later comment, I would say the pie was worth its salt, as Sebastian would say, or worth one cup and one fourth of cinnamon, as I would put it.
Although this pie will not be featured in the new season set to release this upcoming April, Black Butler’s return promises a storyline that will delight older fans and new fans alike more than concerning amounts of cinnamon ever could.
The season will be available on the anime streaming service Crunchyroll as part of this spring season following the 2024 winter season, while the older seasons are now available on Netflix.
