Opinion: Top 5 must-watch college football teams ahead of the playoffs

So far, the 2023-24 college football season has not disappointed fans, and as the playoffs close in, everybody is on the edge of their seats to see which few teams make it.

Senior football player Declan Auton predicted that the Georgia Bulldogs’ ”reign [as] the best team in college football will soon come to an end. I think that they will be exposed by the other teams in the playoffs.”

Here are our picks for the top five colleges that will be seen further into the playoffs.

Georgia Bulldogs

The Bulldogs are now 29-0 since their last loss, winning 2 National championships since. This season, Georgia is 12-0 in divisional and non-divisional matchups. This week they face 11-1 Alabama in the SEC championship. If Georgia loses this game they would not be knocked out of the playoffs. They would likely move to the fourth seed and face the new number one seed.

Michigan Wolverines

The Wolverines are 12-0 this season after knocking off Ohio State to stay in playoff position. This week the Wolverines play in the Big 10 championship game vs. Iowa. If Michigan wins this game, it will be the 45th Big Ten championship in the school’s history. Michigan is hoping Georgia loses to Alabama this week so they can receive the number one seed in the playoff bracket.

Washington Huskies

The Huskies have fought their way to a 12-0 record this season, knocking off division rival number five ranked Oregon in a close game. This week the Huskies face number five Oregon once again in an odd championship game. This game is confusing because of the recent ending  of the Pac-12 Conference.

Ohio State Buckeyes

The Buckeyes currently hold an 11-1 record after losing to Michigan. The loss does in no way mean that Ohio State is out of contention, they are still a powerhouse in the Big 10. The playoffs for Ohio are slowly fading, but there is still hope if they finish out strong; it’s going to be an uphill battle for the Buckeyes.

Alabama Crimson Tide

The Crimson Tide has always been dominant in the SEC, with the only competition being Georgia. This Saturday, Alabama will take on Georgia in the SEC championship which will be a major deciding factor in the future of these teams. If Alabama wins, they not only solidify themselves as the SEC champion but also a threat in the postseason. ‘Bama is a team that should absolutely be watched coming into the playoffs.
