The OH varsity football team has tackled their way through the 2023 season. The team achieved a record of 6-3 which reserves them a spot in the IHSA playoffs.
Their season record sets them up to face 7-2 Warren Township in what’s expected to be an intense battle.
OH senior varsity football player Cole Sobotka said, “I think it’ll be an uphill battle, but I’m hoping that we get past Warren Township.”
With both teams sitting at a similar record, the outcome of the game is quite unpredictable.
Focused on the win, Sobotka said, “that’s the goal right now: just knocking [opposing teams] down one at a time.”
This season, Oswego’s varsity football team started off with a 4-0 record, demolishing high school teams in the division.
In the last five weeks, the team has only won two out of five divisional games, losing a close game to Plainfield North and Minooka. Their final loss came as they lost 17-0 facing Yorkville.
To succeed in the playoffs varsity will need to be focused on the effort of the team if each player does what they are supposed to do on the field Oswego’s going to make it far as a team.
Dekker Zelensek, a sophomore on varsity, spoke about the team’s playoff journey starting Friday. “To make it far in the playoffs we just need to practice hard and stay locked in. We can’t let things distract us from what we need to do to win.
Zelensek also talked about his new found lifestyle on the varsity football team. “Being on varsity as a sophomore is a great opportunity. It allows me to get a feel of what I need to do to be able to succeed next year,” he said.
The loss to Yorkville put some worry in the air for their playoff expectations. This also set some Oswego players back in what they believed they could accomplish.
Oswego ended up pulling through and achieved a spot in the playoffs. This puts the question in the minds of the Oswego High School fans: how far will varsity football make it in the playoffs?
Fans can find out tonight at the first IHSA Class 8A playoff game in Gurnee, October 27th, at 7pm.
