As soon as September hits and the first leaf falls, so does the new featured drink menu. From pumpkin spice to apple cider, all the local and widespread coffee shops are stocked with seasonal autumn flavors.
Some, like OH senior Hailey Patterson, say it’s the best time of the year. “I think one of my issues is that this drink isn’t an all-year-long drink,” Patterson said. When talking about her signature beverage, she prefers the Pumpkin Spice Chai latte from Dunkin‘.
Some popular fall flavors throughout the years have included pumpkin spice, apple, cinnamon, chai, and maple. The most trendy places to get beverages have included Starbucks and Dunkin’.
Overrated? Maybe, but people still love it. After all, that fall morning beverage sets an unexplainable energy that puts anyone in the mood for the season.
My first impression of the fall drink propaganda was that it is overrated. But as the saying goes, don’t knock it till you try it. Although fall flavors are not my top pick, I will still reach for the occasional Pumpkin spice cold foam at Starbucks to add to my blonde vanilla latte. The delicious pumpkin coffee flavor is achieved without being bombarded with sweetness.
Contrary to popular belief, it is not necessary to be a fan of the pumpkin drinks to enjoy a tasty fall beverage. OH senior Ivee Reese said, “I think they are overplayed… pumpkin is just nasty in general.¨
Although Reese said, “Any apple drink I’d be down to try… apple fall drinks, there aren’t enough of them. I think there should be more.” There really is something for everyone.
What’s better than a seasonal drink? Well, quite a few things, but also seasonal drinks from a local coffee shop.
Oak+Bean, a local coffee shop established in downtown Oswego, has a variety of different flavors and syrups to add to drinks. The apple cider is the perfect beverage for those crisp fall days. Pairing a brisk afternoon walk through downtown with a hot or cold apple cider from Oak+Bean makes for a fantastic outing.
That said, it’s perpetually better to purchase from a local shop than a chain business; it provides support to the community while simultaneously being handed a home-brewed drink.
Fall drinks are a staple for the season. So next time you’re out, go ahead and grab a seasonal drink from your local or chain coffee shop. It helps to bring in the season and introduce the fall ambiance.
“Whenever I get my nice drink…I feel like it’s fall time,” said Patterson.
